Donald W. Shriver Jr. is an ethicist and President Emeritus of Union Seminary in New York City.
Shriver an ordained Presbyterian minister who has belonged to the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations since 1988, was president of Union Seminary from 1975 to 1991.
He has taught ethics at Union, Columbia University, Jewish Theological Seminary and Emory University, written 13 books, including An Ethic For Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics, 2005, and lectured worldwide. In 2009 he was awarded the 18th Grawemeyer Award in Religion for the ideas he set forth in his 2005 book, Honest Patriots: Loving a Country Enough to Remember Its Misdeeds.
He has had extended residences and travels in India, S. Africa, Germany, South Korea and Northern Ireland, along with travel in 50 other countries. His recent writings have concentrated on case studies of these countries in the area of conflict transformation, including the U.S. and its struggles for justice in race relations.
