Loris Facchinetti has, for more than 25 years, led important organizations and associations operating in defence of the civil and human rights in various countries with totalitarian regimes. He has participated in the activities of the Silent Church in the USSR and in eastern countries and has collaborated with the top political and cultural periodicals of the anti-Soviet democratic dissent including "Possev" and "Grani", organizing the structure and diffusion of "Samizdat", the protection networks for refugees and defence of political prisoners. Between 1970 and 1989, he coordinated various Groups and Committees for Human Rights in the USSR and in countries with totalitarian regimes. Furthermore, he organized networks for fleeing anti-Soviet dissenters and logistical support for refugees. He organized protest initiatives against repressive regimes, both right- and left-wing, as well as international campaigns in defence of political prisoners and minorities, including the campaign against the use of psychiatric institutions and hospitals as a method of repression, the campaign for the liberation and the expatriation of anti-regime intellectuals and Russian Jews, and the campaign for freedom of press and expression. Beginning in the mid 1980s, he dedicated himself exclusively to the improvement of the quality of life of those in difficulty and inasmuch was an advisor on social policies for various institutions. He worked in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, both in social and health activities as well as in humanitarian emergencies.
Currently he is involved in peace projects in the Middle East, in the creation of schools and health clinics in Africa and in the experimental Troina Institute of Scientific Research (OASI-IRCCS) project "Città Aperta" which promotes integration of society’s “weak” and “strong”. He has directed scientific and cultural publications and is an expert in communication and human resource management. Among his various positions are: Representative of the Mayor of Rome for Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean – Science and Culture; Director of Public Relations for the Troina Institute of Scientific Research (OASI-IRCCS); President of the Technology and Medical Institute TECNOM International; Vice President of the Medical Solidarity Institute ONLUS; President of the Social and Health Commission; and Co-Founder of the Mount Sinai International Foundation.
