Dr. Habyalimana has been the Executive Secretary of the Rwandan National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC) since 2009. Prior to assuming this position, Dr Habyalimana J.B. served as the President of this Commission from 2002. The goals of NURC are to promote unity and reconciliation by creating a climate of trust and harmony among the people as well as monitoring whether political parties, civil society, public and private institutions observe policies of unity and reconciliation. During the past 10 years, he has played a key role in post-genocide rebuilding particularly with regard to unity and reconciliation process in Rwanda.
From 1999 to 2001 in partnership with the US Embassy, he coordinated activities of a club of tolerance and reconciliation in Rwanda especially by organizing debates on peace and conflict prevention and resolution.
After the genocide he served as Director General of the King Faysal Hospital (KFH) from 1994 to 1999 and worked as Specialist Physician in the same Hospital. In 1998 he was elected for one year as the president of Rwanda Medical Association.
Dr. Habyalimana has represented Rwanda in various regional and international conferences related to peace, conflict prevention and resolution, gender and human rights, among them is the International Conference on women and women rights held in Beijing in 1995, International Convention of all Forms of Racial Discrimination held in Geneva in March 2011. He organized and attended various Seminars on unity and reconciliation and Gacaca for Rwandan Diaspora, in Moscow in 2002, in Brussels 2007 and a civic education program (Itorero) for Rwandan students in Bangalore, India in 2010. In 2003 he participated in a training on conflict resolution and peace building in the School of International Training (SIT) in Vermont – USA. He is a member of Rotary Club Mont Jali and was the President of the Club in 2002.
Dr. Habyalimana is a Specialist Physician, born in 1953.
